Young James raises over £400 from Quiz Night

James Ellsmoor is funding a trip to Chile organised by World Challenge to provide life -changing experiences for young people enabling them to develop valuable skills in later life. He will be hiking in the Andes during his month long stay and doing community work in a nature reserve. Part of his fund raising was a very successful quiz at Knighton Village Hall. He borrowed the Loggerheads Community Information shop portable PA system so that everyone could hear!

SHROPSHIRE’S BEST POND

A local couple who created a wildlife sanctuary from scratch at their village farm have spoken of their joy after it was named the best pond in Shropshire. Jane and Steve Ellsmoor from Dorrington Hall Farm, Woore beat off tough challenges from across the county to scoop first prize in the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group's Great Shropshire Pond Competition.

The judges, who included representatives from FWAG and Shropshire Wildlife Trust, commented that the pool, which was created just five years ago, was an excellent wildlife habitat.

Steve Ellsmoor said the pool has become a thriving wildlife reserve, which along with the farm itself, was regularly attracting school trips. “We are very happy to win this award because it is a fairly new pool and a lot of wildlife use it. The award also means we get £250 to be spent on further conservation projects. We are part of a government scheme to encourage greater awareness of farming and environment and students come to learn about food production and how modern farming can still be integrated with the needs of wildlife. We had nearly 500 visitors last year from local schools and as 2008 is the Year of Food and Farming we expect many more this year,” he said. “Many water birds use the pool and kingfishers and oystercatchers have been reported.” (reprinted with permission from Market Drayton Advertiser)

St Mary’s CE Primary School students
rhyme their way to a win!

St Mary’s CE(A) Primary School, Mucklestone, has excelled in creative writing skills and produced a winning poem. The poem ‘Time to Move on’ was recognised as the winner of the Primary Group category of the 2008 National Nasen Poetry Competition.

Children’s writer Pie Corbett presented the children with their prize and also read the winning poem to the audience at the NEC on March 1st at the Education Show. They beat off more than 360 entries from across the UK. The competition’s theme of inclusion was left open to youngsters as to what they think ‘inclusion’ means.

Lorraine Petersen, Chief Executive Officer of Nasen said: “Entries for the competition have grown every year. The students of St Mary’s have a real flare for poem writing; it was highly creative and a pleasure to read.” All the winning poems are to be published in an anthology by Rising Stars, which is available to all Nasen members to use as a teaching resource.”

St Mary’s poem - Time to Move On
Feeling lonely and neglected
in this world of fear
Just because I’m in a wheelchair doesn’t
mean that they can sneer.
Can’t do sums, can’t write words,
got good ideas but no one listens it appears.
I’m depressed, being bullied when I play.
Hate it here, don’t want to stay.
I need glasses so I can see,
Why do people laugh at me

Fat, thin, short, tall, black, white,
disabled, blind.
It doesn’t matter what you look like,
everyone is kind.
What a school! I am welcome here.
People don’t bully or make fun of me,
just accept me for who I am.
We are all excited because everyone is united.
What a school, very cool

THE LOGGERHEADS FOOTBALL CLUB

Loggerheads F.C. currently operate with two adult teams, one being in the Potteries & District League and the other in the Coors League. Both teams play their home games at the Burntwood pitch, kindly rented to us by the Parish Council.
We as a Club have had some very good teams and footballers (some of whom have progressed to professional football) over the years and we have won promotion, cups and League titles. But one thing holds us back from becoming more successful and that is the lack of water, electricity and better changing facilities at the Burntwood. We are going to try and address this problem through further liaison with the Parish Council and local community in the near future, especially with the local junior school regarding Junior facilities. Initial talks with the Hugo Meynell School have been promising.
Loggerheads Football Club and Committee has a wealth of local footballing experience which is available to anyone in the Parish. This is the first season of many that we have not run a junior team and it is a matter that we would like to address for next season (an age range from under 8's to under 16's). Anyone thinking of starting a team and looking for help or advice, then please don't hesitate to contact one of our committee members who will be more than happy to assist you with the league contacts, training facilities and football kits etc. Loggerheads Football Club is looking to move forward. We would like you to be a part of that.

A letter written to us by a local resident:
The lack of Facilities for young adults in Loggerheads

The lack of facilities, activities and programmes for young adults in Loggerheads is unfair. Why are we not stimulating and expanding their knowledge and ensuring they are happy in their home town? Without being mobile i.e. being able to drive, Loggerheads is, most of the time, a remote place with a growing population that can not travel to towns where facilities, activities and programmes are available to young adults. If the community was to look more at finding interests for the local young adults and not just finding the time to complain about us, we may be less of a hassle and more of a recognised member of the area.
Things that need addressing in Loggerheads are the “welcome to Loggerheads” sign which has worn out and no longer welcomes you into Loggerheads and the lighting at night for the centre of Loggerheads is very poor. Why can’t we have a focal point for us to chat and meet our friends that is safe and well lit? We must resolve these young adults’ frustrations to ensure a strong, happy community in Loggerheads. Many of the trouble makers are from outside and maybe if the local young adults felt more as part of the town then just maybe we would own it more.
A fed up Teenager !!!!
