Ashley leading from the front

Historically the parish of Ashley was joined with the parish of Mucklestone, but when John Williams, our previous vicar, retired, these two parishes were joined with Broughton and Croxton.
This means there are lots of people in our new larger community that we don’t know. To overcome this we thought a Festival should be organised aimed at bringing the whole community together. We have focused on encouraging flower arrangers from the various churches to help fill the church with floral art designed to take your breath away!
A Festival of Music and Flowers is being planned for the first weekend of June this year at St John the Baptist, Ashley’s Parish Church.
Peter Shone, our Director of Music, is planning various musical events. These will include children and lots of local singers. Peter’s “Sound’s Good” events are well known. Anybody who wants to come along is welcome – you don’t have to be able to sing, just to enjoy trying. We are hoping to fill the church with the voices of our local people throughout the parishes, watch out for adverts for this.
We also hope to attract visitors from outside our area too. There is a bus stop outside the church so travel from Newcastle under Lyme and Shrewsbury etc. could not be easier, tell your friends. It will be a wonderful day out.
Watch out for the posters that will soon be everywhere. Our local children are designing them in our poster competition. More details will be forthcoming shortly.
The dates for the Festival are 5th to the 8th June – put it in your diary! See you there.
Linda Ellis.

Generation Green - St Mary’s School Mucklestone

We have joined Generation Green (a project of British Gas). Green leaves are the currency of Generation Green. Leaves are earnt by completing activities. They vary from the simple to the more challenging. We can convert ‘leaves’ into all sorts of prizes like pencils, games, recycling bags and lots more. We are working hard to earn leaves in school by being environmentally friendly. Parents and friends can earn leaves for us by completing a simple Energy Savers Report (this places you under NO obligation to British Gas). Please visit the website and help us to earn

HALES CRICKET CLUB - Gearing up for the 2009 season

How many of you are aware that there is a Cricket club right on the doorstep of Loggerheads? Well if you were to take a stroll along Almington Road in Hales on a Saturday afternoon during the spring and summer months then its likely that you may come across two teams enjoying our national game at the picturesque home of Hales CC.
Formed in 1981 by a group of friends looking for some fun in the sun, the club has progressed significantly since, whilst retaining the warmth and friendliness of a small outfit. In fact there is a strong belief that Hales CC remain one of the smallest cricket clubs in existence within England, with their very small but spirited squad of players.
For the upcoming 2009 season, there will be 22 league fixtures in Division 5 of the Shropshire Cricket League, a host of Sunday afternoon friendlies and a number of 20/20 fun games on Wednesday evening during the middle of the summer. In addition practice night takes place on Wednesday evenings.
Hales CC are on the lookout for some new faces to come along and join our club. Players of all ages and all abilities will be made most welcome to the club. There are regular pre-season indoor nets arranged at Tern Hill should anyone wish to come along and have a go.
If anybody wants any further info, please contact Club Captain Gavin Brookes on 07817 658755 or Club Secretary Jim Ward on 07795 254664. In addition visit the website of our popular local clubhouse, www.halesclub.co.uk

“Bloom in Ashley” Fund Raising Auction
Thursday April 23rd at The Peel Arms, 8.30pm

This auction is being held to raise funds to pay for equipment that is required for our two annual litter picks ie; picking sticks, high visibility jackets, gloves etc. We would also utilise any money raised to invest in our planting schemes around Ashley which started during 2008.
If you have any new or nearly new items that you would wish to donate to the auction you can drop the goods off at 8 St Johns Road, Ashley, or telephone us on 01630 673390 to arrange pick up. Alternatively items can be left at The Peel Arms a few days to a week before the auction. If anyone wants to offer a promise for the auction this would also be most welcome.
What’s happened so far…..
Many readers will have heard about, and hopefully noticed, the successful litter picks in the village during 2008 and many will have also seen the makeover of the triangle of grass at the bottom of Doctors Bank. With the ongoing support of The Peel, the volunteers who make up Bloom in Ashley have been hard at work trying to make our beautiful village just a little bit better. Actions by the group in 2008 included amongst many others, two litter picks, with over 50 volunteers and 60 bags of rubbish collected, landscaping, planting and re-planting of the patch of grass at the bottom of Doctors Bank sponsored by The Peel public house, bulb planting across the village, ready for spring 2009, repairs to footpath stiles in 5+ sites around the village and we got the graffiti in the bus shelter cleaned up!
What’s happening next…..
In 2009 we hope to: Purchase our own set of litter picking equipment, hold a spring (25th April, tbc) and an autumn litter pick, re-plant Doctors Bank, clear the pathway leading from Bell Orchard so work can start on making over the old playground, secure suitable locations for dog fouling bins and extra litter bins, make-over the green opposite The Peel and take environment complaints (drains, footpaths, road surface) to the Parish council.
We need more help in order to make these things happen. If you feel you can give up the odd hour here and there over the coming year then let us know. Send your email address to bloominashley@btinternet.com and we will contact you when we need people to help. There is no commitment in this but we will just let you know when things are happening - its then up to you!

CAROM – Child Aid Romania - The Concert at Knighton

Thank you to everyone who supported or contributed to this event at Knighton Village Hall. We had an enjoyable evening whilst raising £650 for CAROM. This is a small local charity, which is committed to the advancement of education and the relief of financial hardship amongst the disadvantaged children of Romania and their families. We were pleased to welcome Cristina Birsan to the concert. She is the director of a Romanian charity: Atelier Sacelean whose work we currently support. New Minister at Ashley Methodist Church

Rev Robert Fisher, the new Minister at Ashley Methodist Church, has kindly provided a short biography:
I was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, so I can lay claim to be a true ‘Geordie’. I have very fond memories of Durham Methodism, where my family moved to in particular I recall the annual ‘Methodist Big Meeting’ when the cathedral was packed with Methodists from all over the county!
When I left school I went on Voluntary Service Overseas, for twelve months, to teach in the Methodist Secondary School in Sibu, Sarawak. When I returned to the UK I went to Cliff College, near Sheffield, and during the year I was there I offered as a candidate for the Methodist Ministry. I was accepted and spent the next four years at Hartley Victoria Methodist Theological College in Manchester. During a pre-Easter ‘campaign’ in my first year at Theological College I met Kath – who came from the other Newcastle! We were married during my final year in College.
My first appointment as a ‘Circuit’ minister was in Bury St Edmunds. My second appointment was back in the Manchester area. I then left ‘Circuit’ ministry to begin a career in teaching as, what Methodism calls, a ‘Sector’ minister. My first teaching post was as an RE teacher at the Blue Coat School in Oldham. After three years there I was appointed as Head of the Religious Education Department at King Edward VII College in Coalville, Leicestershire.
Six years later I moved as Head of the Religious Education Department at the Lakes School in Windermere. After seventeen years at the Lakes School I left the ‘Sectors’ to come back into ‘Circuit’ ministry. In 2001 I was appointed Superintendent Minister of the Blackburn Methodist Circuit. Four years later I was asked to come to the Newcastle (Staffs) Methodist Circuit as Superintendent Minister.
For Kath our move to Newcastle was like coming home as she grew up in our neighbouring Circuit and attended school in Newcastle. We have two grown-up children, a son who lives in Kendal and a daughter, who lives in Blackburn. We have a grandson who is now coming to the end of his Primary education and our daughter presented us with a granddaughter who is now approaching the ‘terrible twos’!

St Mary’s Primary School, Mucklestone

We’ve been working hard since January and it has been such fun. In art we’ve studied pattern and looked at Aboriginal art; dots are the thing, in every piece of art there are lots of dots. We’ve also looked at Islamic and Scandinavian patterns, with many different colours - gold, blues and reds.
Fun while it lasts
It snowed for half a month and got up to 10cm high. Just for one day we had the day off school which was great, but we also had lots of fun at school.
We all helped in some way to make our snow dome – it was enormous! Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to build a roof. When the snow started melting we climbed over the dome and slid down it. Kaya made a snow seat, it even had a footrest and the outside was shaped like a crown - it was cool Ha! Ha!
Cool Crystals
In science we made salt and sugar crystals, they looked fantastic. Some of them didn’t work out too well because we put too much food colouring in the container. Some were really big and others were just like dots.
Most days we do Literacy and last term we learnt about newspapers. We used the computers to make our own news sheet about the new president of the United States, Barack Obama and the digi blue video cameras to make films about extreme weather conditions.
Councillors for a Day
On Shrove Tuesday year 5 and 6 went to the Civic Offices in Newcastle. We went in a council chamber and we had to act like we were real councillors. We had a budget of £100,000 to share out between safety, leisure and learning, transport, social care and health and prosperous community. There was also a cabinet who questioned each group and made the final decision. The day taught us how to be councillors .

Hugo Meynell Primary School News

The Chinese New Year - year of the OX was on 26th January. School celebrated with a special meal.
Pupils from local schools attended a photography course at Hugo Meynell. We have learned: how to put a camera together and frame what we want in a picture. Plus the purpose of black, white and mid-tones in pictures.
We are holding a book fair at school from 26th February to 4th March. Pupils can purchase books during lunch times and after school. It is World Book Day on 5th March.
There is a sponsored readathon. The readathon is an event done at home where a parent/guardian has to hear their child read a certain amount of pages per day.
Years 5 and 6 have been invited to enter a poster competition to advertise a music and flower festival, taking place at Ashley Parish Church on 5 June to 8 June. The winner will receive a book token and their design as a finished printed poster.
The Valentine meal was on 9th February. All the children enjoyed their meal.
