SAVE THE FREDDIE !
Our family has lived at Oakley Hall, in the neighbourhood of Ashley/Loggerheads, for 28 years. My son Freddie announced a few months ago to that he wanted to audition for a “reality” television programme called “Big Brother” which is a game show in which a group of typically young people live in a TV studio “House” where their actions are filmed by cameras 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Each week the housemates nominate two of their fellow housemates with one of them selected for eviction by way of phone-in voting open to the TV audience. The competition continues until there is only one housemate left, and that individual is rewarded with a substantial cash prize.
Our son, Freddie, was intrigued, in part, by the social experiment aspect of the show. Freddie is a devout conservationist, learning a love of our beautiful countryside from his early days at Mucklestone School. He subsequently became a chorister at Lichfield Cathedral School, then Shrewsbury School and ultimately won a place at Oxford where he majored in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
Freddie is an enthusiastic free thinker who during his years at Shrewsbury was diagnosed with severe dyslexia. It was more than just poor spelling. He had to learn many new skills and deploy other talents to compensate for his real difficulties. Dyslexia does not go away. Today Freddie copes well but does see the world in a very different way from most people. This adds to his pronounced eccentricity, something which his housemates have found annoying. To date they have “nominated” Freddie each week (five times now) to be evicted from the House. Yet, each week a fair minded and tolerant TV audience have voted to keep him in. The drama continues. If you have any interest in Freddie’s continuing odyssey and wish to express your own views please

Hugo Meynell Summer Fayre a great success - £1400 raised

Big thanks to all who attended Hugo Meynell’s School Summer Fayre. We had the fire engine and police cars there and the sirens were definitely tested! A lorry from DHL came along and highlighted the dangers of Lorries and educated the younger ones how important road safety is. The Loggerheads Information Shop was there and we had lots of fun stalls including ‘the human fruit machine’ which went down a treat! There were many prizes to be won too.
The £1400 raised on the days will be put towards school resources, which will in turn benefit all. The recent PTFA spend bought in a huge projector for the school hall, which is fantastic, and also, some whiteboards for various classrooms. So, ALL money raised is really important as it helps all our young children in their educational lives.

Everyone is welcome to our PTFA meetings and our next one will be on Sept 24th at
7.30 p.m. in the school staff room. We look forward to seeing lots of people there to help start planning our next events!
For more information, please contact Lisa on 01630 672750

Dorothy Clive Entertains Himalayan Lily – She’s a Stunner

But you’ll have to hurry to see her before she dies! Cardiocrinum Giganteum, the Giant Himalayan Lily, is in flower now in the quarry at the Dorothy Clive Garden – it takes years to flower, and then dies after flowering, but it does normally leave three or four offsets in the soil which could flower in several years time.

The Dorothy Clive Garden is at Willoughbridge, on the A51 between Pipe Gate and Blackbrook

A SUPER OFFER FOR BUDDING GARDENERS
SHARE A GARDEN - New Style Gardening!

Do you want an allotment or an area to garden?
Plots on Loggerheads Allotments remained empty for many years, but now, with the present climate of credit crunch and not knowing where food is coming from or what has been done to it, there has been such an increase in demand for plots that there is a waiting list! Perhaps the same could be said in your area.
However, a couple of residents within the Loggerheads Parish area who own large gardens are prepared to offer part of their garden as an allotment plot, in exchange for a little general gardening – tidying flower borders etc.

If you are interested, contact the Loggerheads Community Information Shop on
01630 674365, or email
info@loggerheads.eu

DIDN’T WE ALL DO WELL!
ASHLEY COMMUNITY FESTIVAL OF FLOWERS AND MUSIC

The main aim of the Festival was to bring together as many people as possible from the area and to open up the church as a community facility, and the whole event, which took place from 5 to 8 June 2009, was a huge success.
Thirty-three wonderful flower arrangements were designed and constructed by people from five Flower Arranging clubs, five churches, Junior Church, two schools, one college, Brownies and Guides, and Young Farmers. For several days before the Festival opened, the church was teeming with activity; even at 8.00 p.m. the night before, it looked like the aftermath of a hectic day at Covent Garden, but when the doors opened at 10.00 a.m. the next day, the calmness, beauty and serenity belied the energy, activity and sheer hard work that had gone into the creation of the masterpieces.
And, of course, we had three major musical events – the Children’s Concert, with delightful singing by the children of the Hugo Meynell Primary School, the Community Concert and the Songs of Praise Service during which many of they hymns which inspired the flower arrangements were sung. At the Community Concert over forty singers from around the area raised the roof with a programme that ranged from “Jerusalem” to Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World”.
We offer our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors, to our many visitors, and, of course, to those from all parts of the local community who worked so hard to make the event such a success.
You can see a record of the Community Choir concert on www.youtube.com, under “Ashleycommunitysings”, and a professionally compiled CD showing the flower arrangements is available for £3.50 from Linda Ellis on 01630 673331. Also visit www.whatson.org.uk

Sounds Easy Workshop – 5 September 2009

With the Community Choir, we know we have only scratched the surface with singers in our community. Plenty of people who live here have considerable experience of singing and plenty more would love to have a go but can’t make the commitment or are too shy. Over the coming months, we would like to encourage those people to just come and join us for a sing.
The Parish Church is organising a “Sounds Easy” workshop on Saturday 5 September 2009 from 10.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m. – no pre rehearsals, nothing too difficult, just an opportunity to sing some lovely music together and meet others from the community. If you are on the edge of saying “yes”, please contact me and I will send you the details – P.Shone@btinternet.com or telephone 01630 672538.
We will look at another “Community Choir” event with a concert and lead in rehearsals perhaps early next year – if you are interested in being kept informed, please contact me.
MAKING MUSIC LEAVES YOU WITH A LOVELY FEELING – especially singing.

Tadgedale Brook Play Builder Scheme - more Reader reaction:
Dear Editor
In reply to a further point raised by the 'anonymous' author, why doesn't he/she attend the Community Link Meetings or Parish Council Meetings where they can have their say before the meeting begins. Ed Martin has many ideas on the lines of a community centre and I'm sure he would welcome residents' input. It is no use sitting at home with these thoughts! - people need to make themselves heard. Better still why not call in to the Community Shop & leave Eric with your ideas? I am sure he can pass them on to the appropriate person.
As we discussed at the last Community Link meeting - there does seem to be a lack of communication between the various groups and the residents. I, for one, never knew i could sit in on a Parish Council meeting until a few months ago! I do try to do just that when I can.
Regards, Gill Allen, 11 Sharpland
Dear Editor
I welcomed the inclusion of the article “TALKING AND LISTENING …..NOT SHOUTING”. I am one of the "silent majority" referred to as I don't have young children and I love living in our peaceful community. I participated in the Parish Plan, an excellent document, and agree with the finding that the main reason people enjoy living in Loggerheads is "peace and tranquillity." My interest is also that my house backs onto the brook. I have only lived in Loggerheads for 6 years and cannot comment on events of 20 years ago. However, as a teacher, I have spoken to children directly about the proposed play equipment and they responded that they would not like play equipment near to their houses because of the anti social behaviour it attracts. The children I teach are responsible and perceptive about the realities of modern day life.
They did agree with the views of local residents, and those expressed in the Parish Plan, that encouraging flora and fauna is the way forward. Planting a wide variety of plants and shrubs would appeal and attract more species of wildlife and birds. Better pathways would improve access for all and information boards would assist children in enjoying nature and in becoming proactive about environmental and ecological issues. This scheme would also meet the Borough Council's own regulations that no equipment of a play/leisure variety can be located within 10 metres of a boundary fence.
As to a football pitch: perhaps the pitch in the Burntwood could be developed to fulfil this aim?
I believe that we all want to enjoy the rural nature of our community and that residents would support a proposal that encourages more interest in nature whilst preserving our tranquil environment.
Yours sincerely, Julie Dunlevy
(Editor’s note: It also said in the Parish Plan that one of the five visions for the future is that residents of all ages should have equality of access to leisure, recreational and cultural facilities. Facilities for the children and youth of the area should be greatly improved. Surely the proposed Play Builder Scheme in four parts of the Parish is trying to address this vision)

Skipping to a World Record?

On Tuesday 30th June the pupils of Hugo Meynell Primary School, along with other pupils in Staffordshire, had a go at beating the world record for the most people skipping at the same time. A record presently set at 3009 and held by the Chinese (12/07/07). We practised everyday for a week, skipping continuously for three minutes. The rules stated that we could have breaks, but for no longer than 10 seconds at a time. It was hard work and extremely tiring, but it was well worth it. We got to keep the skipping ropes as a reminder of the event and also used the event to help raise money for the Reynaud’s and Scleroderma Association. Unfortunately, we won’t know for a while whether we’ve managed to break the record but finger’s crossed! We’d like to say a big thank you to Miss H Chadwick, who organised the event and our independent witnesses, Mr E Pemberton and Mr A Firth, who judged it.
