TALKING AND LISTENING …..NOT SHOUTING
from a concerned resident, name supplied

Controversy continues about siting play furniture in Tadgedale Walkway. After 20 years the protesters who stopped the originally promised play area seem to have re-emerged with petitions.
It is now clear that the protesters are not the only people with an interest. There are those that have carried out participation in the Parish Plan, public consultations about County Council equipment and those that have talked to the children direct. There are families with children and there is the ‘silent majority’ who have no young children, but want to live in a civilised community.
Times have changed, and it is no use taking a belligerent approach. Twenty years ago protesters shouted at youths, then complained that young people were rude and noisy.
The alternative is to learn to talk and listen, continuing the process of proper participation started in the Parish Plan. This might lead us to agree that:
Toddlers play areas may deter football close to houses: Chestnut Road is unsuitable for kick-about;
That we need to provide for older age groups to avoid misuse of toddlers’ areas; Play furniture should be a certain distance from gardens: What about an all weather floodlit five-a-side pitch?
Where can we put it? Discuss !!
Editor’s comments: This is a big challenge to our Community. What are we going to do about it?. Your reactions please!

The truth about the movie “Slumdog Millionaire” and child poverty
Here is an extract from an e-mail exchange between National Geographic's Marc Silver and Thomas Chandy, CEO of Save the Children in India.
Q. Save the Children is active in Delhi, the nation's capital. How many children live in poverty in that city?
A. Thousands of children live in slums that lack the most basic of amenities such as drainage, water supply, sanitation. Infrastructure is poor. Millions of children across towns and cities in India have no access to education and health care and live in deplorable conditions in slums.
Q. What resources are there to help these slum children?
A. Save the Children works with local partner organizations in New Delhi, Calcutta, and Hyderabad to help slum children get education and training in vocational skills.
Q. Does the movie depiction have any relation to the reality in Mumbai today?
A. The movie does not stretch reality when it speaks of child trafficking. Indeed, children are trafficked by people who force them into begging. Street children are the most vulnerable, having no rights and no protection from exploiters. There is no comprehensive child protection system to protect or prevent exploitation and abuse of street children.
Q. Will Slumdog Millionaire have an impact?
A. It's great that the movie talks about poverty, and is about hope. The reality is millions of children are working when they should be at school. Can we move beyond talking and do something to change this reality?

LOGGERHEADS LITTER FREE ZONE - ‘Loggerheads Pickers and Planters’

A group of about 30 residents have been picking litter for a year now, and there is a lot of improvement. On Saturday 25th April there was a litter pick and the pile of sacks was much smaller than the “Big Litter Pick” last year.
We are now organised with a constitution and a committee to carry out members’ instructions. The litter pickers have merged with the small team who organise the flower baskets in the village centre. Our new name is ‘Loggerheads Pickers and Planters’. We are now ready for the next stage. This is to improve planting of trees, shrubs and flowers in the centre and on main roads. We also want attractive signs on the approaches to the village. This means a lots of fundraising, applying for grants and consultation on a Village Landscape Plan.

Future activities:
Saturday 20th June at 10.00 am - Village centre litter pick
Tuesday 23rd June at 7.00 pm - General meeting, Loggerheads pub

Dog Walkers in Loggerheads

As NuLBC Streetscene has made great strides in improving the area around Tadgedale Brook (provision of litterbins and the removal of the unsightly “bund”). May I remind all dog walkers to clean up after their dog? If you should see an owner failing to clean up after their dog could you remind them that it is an offence not to do so? Failing to clean up is not only a fineable offence (£1000) but is also a danger to children as dog faeces can cause blindness. Thank you !!

BloomIn’Ashley Fundraising Auction

The first fundraising auction for BloomIn’Ashley was held at The Peel Arms on Thursday 23rd April. In total the auction raised £772.50 and exceeded all expectations, almost double what we had hoped for.
The money will be used to pay for a variety of things vital to our activities: litter grabbers, hi-visibility jackets, protective gloves, makeover equipment, 5 ‘volunteers at work’ warning signs and two more editions of the newsletter.
One of the main difficulties for any group like this is getting enough money to do the things that it wants to do. BloomIn’Ashley has been quite fortunate so far - amongst others, £300 was donated by the local parish council; we have received bulbs and flowers donated by Newcastle Borough Council; and the Peel Arms has sponsored a flower barrel.
That said, more money is always needed and the auction provided a perfect fundraising opportunity. The response from the local residents was amazing. Over 70 lots were donated to the auction, including a donation from Morrison’s at Market Drayton. Over 50 people packed out the pub on the night most of whom went home with a bargain.
We would like to thank all those who donated auction items and all those who bought them. Without you the evening would have not been such a success. Final thanks goes to our volunteer auctioneer, Colin Sutton, who made sure we all had an entertaining evening, and Graham and Margaret at The Peel Arms.
The auction turned out to be a fantastic night both for fund raising and for the community to be 'switched on' to what we are trying to do. Twenty eight pickers turned out on the Saturday, including some new faces which is encouraging. 100% success all round.

A VITAL SERVICE IN NEED...

The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice provides respite and end of life care to children from Staffordshire and South Cheshire. It is a place where families and the children can feel at home. The aim is not just to provide the necessary medical care and respite but to give the children every opportunity to gain new experiences and have fun.
Since the economic downturn its income has been severely depleted. 24/7 opening is no longer possible. It has reduced to just 4 nights a week. There is a need for more fundraising in the community, to ensure this desperately needed service remains available for our local children. It costs £2 million a year to provide care and support services to children with life limiting illnesses and their families. 85% of this comes from donations.
The Donna Louise Children’s Hospice is a wonderful place where many volunteers and staff provide the happiest environment possible. There is a Hospice shop in Stone which welcomes good quality merchandise. Any local fundraising efforts will be welcome. For Community groups, the Trust can send speakers to explain more about the trust and its work.

Scientific Advisor required
For a recently established small nature reserve

We are seeking a voluntary Scientific Advisor for a recently established small nature reserve who has a ‘wild-life, natural history’ interest. The relevant information is set out below.
The Turner Hodgkiss Community Nature Reserve was formed in the early part of 2009 as the result of a generous agreement by a local land owner, via a long term lease for an area of about an acre consisting of a small gulley and water body. This land is located at Hookgate (the Ashley-Loggerheads area) and has not been farmed or otherwise used for over 70 years.
There is a group of Trustees as well as a body of volunteers associated with the management of the reserve, however we lack the necessary scientific foundation for some of the decisions which face us. For example, questions like ‘is it safe to introduce such and such, or is it safe to try to eliminate such and such species?’ would be much easier to make if we had access to someone with expertise in wildlife matters.
If you would like further information please contact me by telephone or e-mail so that we can discuss the post and visit the site itself.
