LEEDS OTHER PAPER Dr Tony Harcup
From his beginnings as a volunteer for Leeds Other Paper, reporting from the Leeds Courts and pounding the streets in search of the stories, important to local people but largely ignored by mainstream press, while battling with the NUJ for recognition as a bona fide reporter, to Emeritus Fellow in Journalism (Sheffield University), author of internationally recognised standard texts on journalism, including the Oxford Dictionary of Journalism and recipient of the NUJ Gold Badge of Merit in recognition of his work for journalists and journalism students, there can be few people as qualified to speak on journalism and the alternative press in particular , as Tony.
Given his intimate relationship with Leeds Other Paper from shortly after its inception in 1974, through its transformation to the Northern Star until its demise in 1994, Tony offers a fascinatingly insightful narrative of the history, development and struggles of this publication, once a common sight in the newsagents and on the pub bars of Leeds and eagerly awaited, not least for its comprehensive “What’s On” supplement , an authoritative guide to the music, artistic, political and social life of the city.
